Custom millwork is a great way to accent the interior of any building. Accents such as wainscoting and crown molding create a new dynamic in a room that is both professional and visually appealing. Millwork is versatile and can be used in any setting, from healthcare and educational facilities, to retail and entertainment venues.
In order to keep custom millwork looking its best, it’s important to know how to take care of it. Millwork may not need as much attention as other aspects of your interior, but it will require a little TLC every once in awhile. So in this week’s blog, we’re going to offer some tips on how to care for your wood accents to ensure they are always looking their best.
3 Tips for Caring for Custom Millwork
Clean carefully with water.
You’re probably aware that wood and water don’t mix too well. However, you can clean millwork with a clean cloth moistened with water. This is ideal for getting rid of dirt and other debris that will inevitably accumulate on the surface. Just don’t use too make water, and make sure to dry the water off after you’re done. If you don’t, it could fade the finish over time.
Dust with an electrostatic cloth.
Dust is naturally attracted to finished surfaces, and it will eventually accumulate on millwork. Dust regularly with an electrostatic dust cloth to remove the dust. If you leave the dust there, it could scratch the finish.
Maintain ideal humidity.
Wood likes to be in harmony with the environment around it when it comes to humidity. So if it’s too humid, the wood will absorb some of this water in the air, causing it to swell. If it’s not humid enough, the wood will release its own water, causing it to contract. Both of these are bad for the wood. Maintaining an indoor humidity level of between 40-45 percent will keep the wood in good shape and in harmony with the air around it.
