Our president Jeffrey Hargrave served as a keynote speaker at a HopkinsLocal workshop. Just as we care about community outreach, so does Johns Hopkins Hospital and University. We’ve taken on several architectural millwork projects for Johns Hopkins Hospital, including their School of Medicine, Wilmer Eye Institute, and their coffee and bar shop. Now, we’re partnering with them to help with a much larger Mahogany, Inc. Partners With HopkinsLocalgoal: bringing economic growth and hope back to the city of Baltimore. Here is some more information about HopkinsLocal, its goals, and how it relates to Mahogany, Inc. in particular.
What is HopkinsLocal?
HopkinsLocal began in 2015. It’s an effort and commitment between Johns Hopkins Hospital and University, and their goals are to: promote economic growth as well as employment and investment in Baltimore. Because Hopkins is the largest private anchor institution in Baltimore, they sought to create economic opportunities and wealth for individuals and communities. They had a three-year, measurable goal of being invested in construction, hiring, and purchasing. They surpassed their goals. As of 2020, Johns Hopkins hired 1,457 Baltimore City residents. On top of that, $113 million went towards city vendors. Now they have a new three-year goal.
What Does The Future Hold for HopkinsLocal?
Some of the new goals that HopkinsLocal plans on addressing is
- Creating even more jobs
- Helping citizens with criminal records find economic opportunity
- Increasing spending with Baltimore businesses by $25 million dollars with a focus on veteran-owned, minority-owned, and women-owned businesses
- Helping specific vendors grow their businesses and create new jobs
- Gear 20% of addressable construction spending towards certified businesses that are at a disadvantage (primarily those that are minority, women, and veteran-owned)
- Investing 13% of addressable construction spending towards Baltimore businesses, in general
How Does Mahogany, Inc. Connect?
We’re a locally-owned business that specializes in construction. We’ve had the pleasure of upgrading several other locally-owned businesses in Baltimore. Not only is Mahogany, Inc., a locally-owned business, but we are also as a certified MBE. Being a certified MBE means that 51% of our business operations are owned, controlled, and operated by minorities. Not only can you describe us as experts at general contracting, but community outreach drives our core. Certified MBE’s and urban communities, in general, are often at a disadvantage, especially in terms of economic growth. Partnering with HopkinsLocal was a no-brainer. Not only do we want our business to grow and create job opportunities for others, but we would also like to see other locally-owned businesses thrive. Locally-owned businesses have the heart and spirit that drive Baltimore City.
